Their legacy now lives on, officially enshrined on the school’s newly established Wall of Fame, perched on the upper level of the gymnasium’s north side.

It is a fitting place, overlooking the same hardwood where history was written, and banners were hung high. The Bulldogs won 20 state titles, including a 1923 undefeated season.

The school’s championship titles were earned over a 70-year span, from the 1920s through the 1990s. No other high school in the state has achieved such an extraordinary feat.

On Saturday, November 22, a special ceremony was held inside the gym, marking the 20th state high school basketball championship, and honoring the players and teams that helped build one of the most storied programs in the state.

Famed high school basketball star Calvin Thompson, who played at Wyandotte High School in the 80s, served as emcee. He helped organize and usher in the honorees.

In 2023, Thompson launched the 20 and Counting Project, a celebration of the Bulldogs’ 20 state basketball championships. But he didn’t stop there. He also envisioned the Wall of Fame, a tribute to the players whose achievements continue to inspire.

“It was important to establish the Wall of Fame at Wyandotte as a daily reminder that greatness has walked these halls, and that greatness is still within reach for our current and future Bulldogs,” shared Thompson.

Former Wyandotte High School principal Mary Stewart also spoke of the greatness of the players, but she also extolled the rich legacy that they left behind.

The new Bulldog Wall of Fame recognizes 51 distinguished players and two individuals who played a major role in the success of the basketball program at Wyandotte High School.

To be eligible for the Wall of Fame, a player must have played at the varsity level, Division I or professional basketball.

The two individuals who were honored were selected due to their dedication and service to Bulldog athletics.

“We recognized two extraordinary individuals, Rufus Black and Charlotte Davis, whose passion, leadership, and service helped shape Bulldog athletics for generations. Together, they represent nearly 70 years of dedication to guiding and developing our student-athletes,” added Thompson.

The Wall of Fame honors individuals from Wyandotte High School’s past, but Thompson believes it will inspire current and future generations.

“My hope is that students look at this wall and see what’s possible when they fully commit to their dreams. When they see the map showing where our honorees were born and raised, they’ll understand that greatness doesn’t come from a single place. It comes from belief, hard work, and opportunity.”
